Big week for gay indy comic creators

by @ 12:18 pm. Filed under Brian Andersen, Instinct, Megan Rose Gedris, Prism Comics, So Super Duper, comic books, recommendations

Well, for two of my faves anyway.

Brian Andersen was at Wondercon this past weekend and reports the following:

Hieeeeee Everyone!
A super hot and sexy friend of mine recorded my Reading this past Sunday at the Three Dollar Bill. The quality isn’t the greatest, and I like, talk too fast and jumble all my words together a lot, but if you’re bored and feel like watching me get all crazy over my comic, then this video is SO for you!

Part one:

and part two:

Brian also reports (in his excited, inimitable style):

OH. MY. Good Golly Gosh!!!

Mr. Perez Hilton HIMSELF posted a pic I drew of him as a Superhero on his amazing website! And gave me a shout out and link to my comic book site!!! Whoa! Totally awesome!

Also, my TV appearance on OUT Spoken, along with cutie pie Rich Boutell from “Whatever…” is now posted on Youtube! It’s not everyday you get interviewed about your comic book from a Drag Queen! Yay! The video is only 5 mins long, I hope you like it!

And finally, my very first paid writing piece has just made it into the March issue of Instinct Magazine! I have attached the cover here and the little blurb that I wrote! Yay!

Thank you everyone for being such awesome people that I can share my good fortune with. I don’t want to sound all ego-y with these emails, but I just have to share with the great people in my life! I can’t believe my luck sometimes!

Love and Kissies!
Brian

Megan Rose Gedris, who is an absolute doll with talent to burn, has her webcomic I was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space!!! reviewed by Paige Braddock (of Jane’s World fame) at Prism Comics this week. I LOVE Megan’s stories. They’re funny, clever and just plain fun. Check out the review, the go check out her comics!

“Why not?” indeed!

The folks at Dynamite are bringing together two media icons that I would never have pictured together, but, damn, now that I see them side-by-side, it makes so much sense!

AODXena01Cov.jpg

The cross-over no one asked for — or expected — is finally here! Too big for the movie or television screens, Dynamite presents the ultimate “Why Not?” tale as Ash and the Army of Darkness meet Xena, the Warrior Princess in the first issue of this 4-part mini series event!

Written by master … uh, scribe, John Layman and illustrated by Miguel Montenegro, the first issue of our most unnecessary adventure finds Ashley J. Williams transported to the world of Xena and Gabrielle and, most importantly, Autolycus, who, of course, bears more than a passing resemblance to our main man, Ash. Throw in the Necronomicon and an evil little Ash taking charge of a group of fairies (the winged kind) and hey, you’ve got yourselves a story! Featuring two covers, one by UDON studios and the other by Fabiano Neves!

Due out in March! Place your orders now!

Astonishing X-Men #23: Rumor has it that Joss Whedon finished all the issues of his X-Men run within two months of landing the assignment (despite the irregular publishing schedule). After reading this issue, I think that may be true. Joss’ backstory lets us in on the X-Men’s plan for infiltrating Breakworld and delivers a huge payoff in the last three pages. I’ll say only this - the look on Cyclops’ face. A+

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #8: Part three of Faith’s infiltration of an evil Slayer-killing Slayer’s life and plan to do away with Buffy. Faith and Buffy manage to misunderstand each other again, but it’s all good drama. Getting rid of all that great tension would kill this series faster than it did Moonlighting. A+

Groo the Wanderer: Hell on Earth #1: Ah, Groo! How you made me laugh when I was in high school! Now, not so much. Hell on Earth is an unsubtle and unfunny comic book with a message. I like the message; I hate the unsubtle. Related note: When did NBC go green? C-

Runaways #28: Big week for me and Joss Whedon, it seems. I only picked up Runaways when Whedon took over, so there are some points in this issue I’m really unclear about, like whose parents are these people are who died when by whose hand? This may have been explained in a recent issue, but again the irregular release of this title and the depth of the story and characters make it hard to remember all the details. Still, this is a strong story that manages to stay in its 1800’s character. B+

Comic Recommendations

Gutsville #1

Because I love the Bible and all its sordid ridiculousness, I have to highly recommend Gutsville to …well, everyone. This book has it all - a premise that defies common sense yet draws one into its implausibility, art that all at once is claustrophobic and overwhelmingly large, puritans and other religious fanatics, serial killers, magic and flabby, old-man ass. How can anyone go wrong with such a diverse combination of elements? Writer Simon Spurrier and artist Frazer Irving bring to (dark and eeire) life the story of the descendants of the colony ship Daphne, stuck in the belly of a great sea beast for the past 157 years. They call themselves “Jonahkin” and await the time of “the Great Regurgitation” while being ministered by a justice system that makes The Scarlet Letter look like the ACLU. Yes, it’s as disgusting and oppressive as you imagine, but completely compelling. Get issues 1 and 2 today and breathlessly await issue 3!
